Reversing around a sharp corner on your near-side has to be one of the most difficult things to master as a learner driver wishing to pass their driving test. But it need not be! Here is a tip for you.
Begin the manoeuver by positioning your car about a steering’s distance (up to about one metre) from the footpath. Now start to slowly reverse. The operative word here is SLOWLY.
Don’t be tempted to rush. Make sure you are constantly looking out the rear window, because that is the direction in which you are travelling.
Frequent check for cyclist and pedestrians especially as the front of the car swings out as you begin to enter the corner. Wait until the kerb appears in the rear door window. Count to three. Now is the time to put on a full lock. As the footpath appears in the side mirror, straighten up and slowly move back to the nearest lamppost. That’s all there is to it.
So to recap: Carry out the manoeuver SLOWLY.
Keep a constant watch all around you for pedestrians and cyclists
Always be prepared to stop.
Wait for the footpath to appear in the rear door window.
Look in your side mirror for the footpath to reappear.
Straighten up and move back a couple of car lengths.
You must remain calm at all times. Remember to look out the rear window. Constantly be on the look out for pedestrians, cyclists and other cars. Do everything slowly and practice whenever you can. You’ll be amazed just how easy this can become. So keep practicing and good luck with you driving test. By Brian McHugh
